After an accident or severe decay, you may need to have some of your teeth removed. Since it’s vital to replace missing teeth, our dentists at Millway Dental may recommend dental implants. Though it can take several months for them to be ready to use, the healing time is worth it for many people.
An implant is a prosthetic tooth that our dentists in Mississauga, ON will embed in your jaw. It comes in three pieces, a titanium root, an abutment, and the crown. Before you can get an implant, our dentists must assess your jaw to determine if it has the necessary length and depth to support it.
When you visit our dentists for an assessment, they will take three-dimensional images of your mouth to help them assess the structure of your jaw. They will measure its length and density, then determine whether you can get implants near you.
Then, if your jaw passes the surgical procedure requirements, they will explain the surgery and the length of time necessary for healing. If you have extractions to take out injured teeth, then the implant surgeries can begin the day of the extraction. However, if it’s due to decay, you may need three to six months to heal before the next step takes place.
The implantation of the prosthetics often happens in two to three visits. The root, the titanium screw, of the implant is the first procedure that our dentists near you will do. After embedding the root, they will insert the next one if you’re getting more than one implant.
If not, then you will go home and allow the surgical site to heal. It can take about three or four months because the screw needs to fuse with the bone before the next step takes place. After the root and bone fuse, the abutment and crown go onto the implant.
This last step finishes the implantation of your prosthetic tooth, but you should wait two to four weeks to allow for healing before eating with it. During the healing period, eat soft foods or try not to chew on the implant side.
